Bindi #10 on Queenslanders Who'll make 2013 Headlines

The crimped hair has gone, replaced by long locks curled in that way beloved by teenage girls the world over.

Bindi Sue Irwin has grown up – but don't worry, she still wears khaki.

The world remembers her as a heartbreaking eight-year-old, telling millions at Steve’s 2006 memorial service how much she loved her father.

"My daddy was my hero. He was always there for me when I needed him. He listened to me and taught me so many things, but most of all he was fun."

But now 14, Bindi, named for her father’s favourite crocodile, has become an identity in her own right.

There's a clothing range – Bindi Wear International, a swag of awards ranging from Nickelodeon Kids Choice to a Logie for Most Popular New Talent in 2009.

Then there are the countless books, tv shows, songs and even a movie (Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove) and that's not counting the Australian magazine industry's ongoing love affair with the Irwins.

The girl who grew up in front of cameras – be it wrestling crocodiles with her mum and dad or dancing to a wildlife loving beat – won’t be shying away from them as a teenager.

Next year Bindi will be coming to our screens as Nim in the sequel to Nim's Island, taking over the role from Abigail Breslin.

Her role at Australia Zoo also continues to grow – Bindi, along with brother Robert – are increasingly becoming headlining acts at the sanctuary their father created, much to the delight of their many American fans.

The Irwin family accepted a check from Heritage Bank for $5000 for the hospital. Bindi, 13, recently chatted with People Pets about life at the zoo. “The animals here are like family,” she dished. “We had the best time just taking the film crew [for online series Growing Up Wild] around the zoo and showing off our gorgeous animals.” Bindi adds, “It’s great to play with the animals – well, not the crocodiles! And to know that they were the same animals that dad was brought up with, it’s pretty special.” Source: Just Jared Jr.

Bindi and Robert on Growing Up Wild - Episode Clip

Bindi & Robert in Growing Up Wild

Bindi Irwin: I Never Want My Dad's Message of Conservation to Die
For Bindi Irwin and her brother Robert, the best way to get moving in the morning is with footage of their dad, the always-enthusiastic Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin. "We'll get up and put on a Daddy DVD, just to remember all of our wonderful adventures with him," says 13-year-old Bindi, who was 8 when her wildlife conservationist father was killed by a stingray in 2006. "We'll often put in a documentary and watch him and have a smile on our face – it's a great way to start the day." Smiles abound at the Australia Zoo, where Bindi and 8-year-old Robert live, along with 1,200 animals. It's the same place where her father discovered his passion for animals as a child. This month, they're inviting audiences to meet some of their favorite creatures in the online series Growing Up Wild, debuting on the new Pet Collective YouTube channel. "The animals here are like family," Bindi tells PEOPLE. "We had the best time just taking the film crew around the zoo and showing off our gorgeous animals." Episodes featuring crocodiles, rhinos and echidnas give viewers a taste of what zoo life is really like. "It's great to play with the animals – well, not the crocodiles!" she says. "And to know that they were the same animals that dad was brought up with, it's pretty special." On top of living with tigers and cheetahs, Bindi and Robert keep a few chickens as pets. Their German shepherds, Diamond and Dot, also serve a special purpose at the zoo. "During the day they're puppy dogs, and at night they're watchdogs," she says. "They're great dogs. And while we're away, they help to guard the zoo." Already an encyclopedia of animal knowledge, Bindi's goal is to continue spreading the word about conservation, like the plight of the Javan rhino, which are being poached to make medicine out of their horns. When you visit the Australia Zoo to meet its white rhinos, it helps fund the zoo's conservation efforts. "The way we're going, Javan rhinos will be gone by the time I'm an adult," she says. "It would be devastating to lose them. I want the next generation to be able to experience them." They are words her father would be very proud of. "We never want Dad's message to die," she says. "It's wonderful that we're able to carry on in his footsteps and keep his message alive." Source - People Pets

Paul and the Irwin's!

Almah the Albino Scores New Home

WEIGHING in at a staggering 45kg and stretching out to a whopping 4.2 metres long, it took the combined efforts of three Australia Zoo reptile keepers, plus Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin to carry Alimah into her new enclosure. Terri said Alimah was the only albino Burmese python on display in Australia. "She is an interesting snake because they grow to be one of the giants," she said. "She will grow to be about 4.8 metres and about 100kg." Last week, Lilly the famous reticulated python at Australia Zoo died of old age. Lilly, at between 35-40 years old, was one of the largest and oldest pythons in captivity. Bindi said she had known Lilly all her life. "Saying goodbye to her was certainly sad," she said. "But she has spent over 30 fantastic years here at Australia Zoo and I am sure Alimah is going to love her new home as much as Lilly did." Robert said Alimah was such a gorgeous python and she seemed to have felt right at home. Source - Sunshine Coast Daily

Bindi supports "Earth Hour"

Bindi is supporting the "Earth Hour" today, in hope of making a difference....

EARTH HOUR EMBRACED BY GENERATION-NEXT

Earth Hour is seeing record numbers of children and teenagers all around the globe getting involved in the campaign to take action for a sustainable future. From Libya to Swaziland and India to Singapore, Earth Hour is being celebrated and in some cases organised by youths who want to protect the planet.

“We have a lot to learn from the passion, commitment and knowledge of young people who are making a difference to the planet – these are truly the most inspiring stories ,” said Andy Ridley, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour’s youngest Ambassador, 13-year-old Wildlife Warrior, Bindi Irwin, firmly believes that each and every one of us can make a difference.“The footprints you leave on the planet today, will effect generations to come, your children and grandchildren,” she says.

“We must all work together to make this world a better place, to ensure that our future is a bright one. WWF’s Earth Hour is a great way to get involved and start making a change. If we don’t start changing our ways soon, there will be nothing left for my generation, and the generations after me.”

Irwin family plays at dolphin habitat

A Las Vegas visit by the family of late Australian TV crocodile hunter Steve Irwin raised questions Thursday about whether they were following through on his plans to open a zoo here.

Irwin's widow, Terri, and their children, Bindi and Robert, were guests of The Mirage on Thursday during the family's tour of Siegfried & Roy's Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat.

Before he was killed while filming a stingray in September 2006, Steve Irwin had plans to open a Las Vegas offshoot of the Australia Zoo founded by his parents near Brisbane, according to published reports.

Terri Irwin told an Australian newspaper three years ago that hundreds of Australians would be among 900 people employed at the wildlife showcase in Las Vegas.

Asked whether the family was in town for talks about the zoo, a public relations rep for MGM Resorts International said she was not aware of that. She indicated the Irwins were vacationing in Las Vegas

Irwin Family bond with Gosselin

This week in Kate Plus 8, the Gosselin family travels to Australia for a series of adventures that leave a lasting impression on them.

Filming was done last year and among the excursions was a visit to Australia Zoo where the family bonded with the Irwin family to such a degree that Kate Gosselin made a solo trip back in November to celebrate Steve Irwin Day at the zoo with Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin.

"I fell in love with the Irwin family," she said from her home in Pennsylvania. "We all did and we've kept in touch.

"I wanted to go back and help raise funds to keep Australia's animals healthy and happy and protected and safe. I fell in love with koalas when I was there originally, so I had to go back for my koala fix."

It was the first overseas trip for Kate Gosselin and her family of eight, which includes 11-year-old twins and seven-year-old sextuplets. Originally the series included husband Jon but after the couple split up there was a name change and a revamp of the series into its current format.

It has now been cancelled and Kate Gosselin is working as a blogger for a coupon website that offers discounts to US shoppers.

She said the children missed having the camera crew in the house and the travelling.

"I have to say that beyond the experiences that we're missing, I do feel bad for our fans, the people who have watched my kids grow up, and now we're missing from their lives.

"I started a website, Kateplusmy8.com, to keep everyone informed of what we're doing, so that they don't feel such a humongous absence. I've had emails saying 'I feel like you're our neighbour that has moved far, far away and we'll never see you again'."

Not all online comments about Gosselin are so positive and that is something she sometimes struggles to cope with.

"If I said it didn't hurt, I wouldn't be human, but it's one of those things that anybody that's in the spotlight has to deal with," she said. "I don't take it personally because 98 per cent of what they write and say is untrue, so I just disregard it."

Brand New Layout!

A new year, new layout! I hope you all like this wonderful green one! The old one was getting too old and boring, so we changed it! I love this image, especially the giraffe! Not only that, but the main site has had a makeover as well, celebrating 2 years online! How cool is that?!?! On the 17th January the site will be 2 years old... looking forward to it! :)

Australia Zoo Powers On

LIVING at Australia zoo can have its challenges.

Robert can't just zip around on the new mountain bike he got for his birthday.

He has to check where the cheetahs and tigers are before heading off in the huge complex.

And he and Bindi go back to school on Thursday - a lot earlier than most youngsters their age.

But the two Irwin kids literally oozed enthusiasm for their home as they showed off their newest addition yesterday.

Another link in the chain of the long dream about Africa development has been completed with a new walking track linking the exhibit to the zoo.

Already Africa is proving to be a crowd magnet.

Hundreds of people chose Australia Zoo as the place to be on Boxing Day.

Terri, Robert and Bindi happily posed for photographs, signed autographs and talked to the fans as they walked the 700m track linking the Tiger Temple exhibit to the African savannah.
